Mississippi Area Ride & Lunch lead by Charlie Marquette

July 27 @ 10:00 am 3:00 pm UTC+0

Charlie will lead us on a fun ride through the back roads of Mississippi where we will arrive in Picayune for a lunch of pulled pork, cole slaw, roll, dessert and drink for $10.00 to support the Backpack ministry at his church.

Yesterday I checked out some of the roads that I wanted to take you on but found one of the major ones was completely closed at one point with no decent detours, so on to plan “B”. The attached map is what I am currently planning.  I want to make a complete trial run this week checking out good rest stops.  The schedule is still the same, meet at Paul’s Pastry at I-59 exit 6 for 9:30. I would suggest getting off at exit 4 to top off your tanks (Shell, Exxon and Chevron west of I-59 with best prices in town) than back to I-59 North to exit 6. Departure from Paul’s at 10.

BackPack is a program to provide food for needy elementary school age children on weekends during the school year. Participating elementary schools in the area identify deserving recipients and provide us with a number of “Backpacks” required. Volunteers from various local churches come to our church to help pack the “Backpacks” on Wednesday. The “Backpacks” are then delivered to the schools where they are distributed to the children on Friday. 150-200 “Backpacks” were distributed each week this school year.

I am working on a route that includes some interesting and scenic roads, many of which have been recently resurfaced. You will be able to either eat indoors at tables or on the lawn under the pecan trees.

Where will we form up and can I join the group as you’ll come into Mississippi?

Frank, we’ll meet up at Paul’s Pastry, exit 6 off I59 about 9:30. This would be about 45 minutes to an hour from where you live in Gulfport. I’m still finalizing the route, but generally it will be north on 43 to just south of Columbia, south east to Poplarville (still exploring condition of some of these roads), then to Silver Run area, then back to Picayune, about a two hour loop.
